Tax Manager British American Tobacco LLC February 2014 – to date Responsibilities: While being responsible for overall compliance with Kazakhstan tax rules and regulations my specific responsibilities include extracting relevant financial information from SAP accounting system, analyzing data and then preparing various periodic tax returns such as annual corporate income tax, VAT, excise and returns related to other taxes in an accurate and timely manner. My job also involves interaction with tax authorities at various lower to senior levels within the state tax administration set-up including coordinating and managing issues related to tax audits, updating the SAP accounting system in line with changes in tax regulations and managing various taxation specific reporting soft wares to ensure that they are in synch with the back-end SAP based financial accounting systems. Analyzing and advising management on operational and financial impact of new tax legislations including devising ways and necessary system changes to ensure compliance.

The Company is a leading international tobacco group with 200 products and cigarettes factories in 39 countries and 3rd largest in terms of market share in Kazakhstan with 14 branches across the country. Responsibilities: Having joined the Company in November 2009 as Financial Controller was promoted to the position of Deputy Chief Accountant. In September 2012 the Company decided to change the sales and distribution model by outsourcing it to a third party and close down all its branches in various cities across Kazakhstan. The Company implemented SAP in January 2011. Being in charge of accounting activities of 14 branches using 1C, I was one of the “key users” of SAP. Accordingly following having gone through extensive on-site training on various aspects of the new system it was my responsibility to ensure further training of the branch staff on the new System and making sure that transition from 1C to SAP goes through smoothly without any business interruption. This involved extensive pre change-over date preparations and handling post implementation issues in a smooth and timely manner by coordinating between the end users and the implementation team.

Joined the Company in November 2009 as financial controller in charge of 14 branches. In my position as financial controller in charge of accounting activities of 14 branches of the Company across Kazakhstan I was responsible for ensuring integrity and accuracy of the accounting and other financial records being maintained on individual IC accounting systems maintained at by branch accountants. This involved end of the month procedures of checking and cross checking branch sales figures for the month and ensuring they tied in with end of the month cash, receivables and inventory figures, checking and making sure that physical inventory balances as per warehouse records matched with book balances of inventory and differences if any are promptly identified, reconciled and corrected. Checking branches expenses reports and making sure that all expenses were in line with budgets and pre-approved procedures. Making sure any inventory in transit from head office to branches was accounted for properly in the books of the branches to avoid problems with month end consolidation of financial results of the company. Conducting surprise visits of the branches to conduct cash count and inventory and fixed assets stock check with each branch visited one in every 12 months.

The Company with an annual turnover of USD 6-7 m and over 350 employees was an FMCG manufacturer, involved in the production and sale of body care and house-hold cleaning products in Kazakhstan and other CIS countries. For my brief Urker Cosmetics JSCstay with the company in my position as chief accountant carried out various modifications and enhancements to the 1C accounting systems such as development of customers aging reports and creditors balances maturity profile to meet and restructuring of the chart of account to facilitate submission of various reports to the lending banks.

The Company is engaged in oil field supplies to major oil producing companies such as KPO, AGIP, TCO and their sub-contractors in the West Kazakhstan region and has an annual average turnover of over USD 8 million. As its chief accountant and reporting to the financial controller, I had the overall responsibility of accounting and corporate compliance functions of the company, which included but was not limited to, maintenance of the integrity of financial accounting (1C) and other taxation reporting systems (as ISID, EFNO, NDS) maintenance of accounting and statutory records, preparation and/or review of various tax and other statutory returns and ensuring their timely submission to the tax department and other regulators as the National Bank of Kazakhstan and the Statistical Department, production of monthly results prepared principally in line with IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards) and various other management information including preparation and submission of annual corporate income tax return. In addition I was also responsible for providing support to accounting and taxation functions of a number of other Group subsidiaries and associated companies.

As a senior accountant handling bills payable my duties included monthly processing of over 300 invoices of 70 local and 15 international suppliers and services providers in accordance with the local tax regulations and business segment (branch/department) based cost structure to facilitate reporting of periodic financial results by business/cost centers for management information purposes. The job also involved follow-up on advance payments to suppliers/service providers and their timely adjustment against final invoices and monthly preparation of “acts of reconciliation” with each supplier. I was also responsible for preparation of monthly VAT returns and their submission with tax committee and from time to time sorting out any reconciliation issues with them.

The Company, which was a branch office of a company based out of Italy, was engaged in the business of man power (both local and expatriate work force) out souring to oil exploration and production companies in West Kazakhstan such as Karachaganak Petroleum Operating and AGIP. I was responsible for processing cash advance reports, calculation of salaries and related withholding and other taxes and statutory deductions such as income tax, social tax and pension fund contributions, preparation and filing of related tax returns and preparation and submission of various periodical reports to the statistical department.
